Tony Morfitt, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Cedar Rapids, has been promoted to Colonel in the Air Force and Iowa Air National Guard as of January 31, 2026. Morfitt has served with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa since 2010.
In his military role, Colonel Morfitt is now the State Staff Judge Advocate for the Iowa Air National Guard at Joint Forces Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa. This position makes him the senior attorney for the organization. He leads a team that includes seven other attorneys serving in Des Moines and Sioux City.
United States Attorney Leif Olson commented on Morfitt’s promotion: “This promotion is evidence of the commitment to duty, leadership, and public service that Tony has exhibited throughout his career,” Olson stated. “As both an AUSA and a member of the military, he has served our nation with honor and distinction. The USAO is proud to have him as a member of our team.”
Morfitt joined the 132d Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard in 2014 after four years with the Air Force Reserves. The 132d Wing carries out missions worldwide involving remotely piloted aircraft, cybersecurity operations, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and surveillance activities. As a legal advisor within this unit, Morfitt guided commanders on issues such as military justice and cyber law.
He also played a central role in establishing the 168th Cyber Operations Squadron by providing legal advice on emerging cyber law matters. During the 2020 elections, he helped support cybersecurity efforts for the State of Iowa.
Morfitt began his Air Force service after graduating from the University of Iowa College of Law with high distinction and membership in the Order of the Coif. He spent more than four years on active duty as trial counsel in over twenty cases.
His military honors include two Meritorious Service Medals, three Air and Space Commendation Medals, eight Air and Space Outstanding Unit Awards, two Air and Space Longevity Service Awards, as well as graduation from both Air War College and Air Command and Staff College.
