A federal jury in Cedar Rapids found Joshua James Cannady, 51, of Yucca Valley, California, guilty on eight drug-related charges after a three-day trial. The jury deliberated for about 90 minutes before returning the verdict.
Cannady was convicted of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and seven counts of distribution of a controlled substance. According to evidence presented at trial, Cannady collaborated with others to transport methamphetamine and fentanyl from California to Iowa between May 2023 and November 2024. Authorities intercepted more than 500 grams of methamphetamine and approximately 1,700 fentanyl pills from seven packages sent from California. Investigators found Cannady’s fingerprints on three of those packages.
Sentencing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence report. Cannady remains in custody pending sentencing. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison, with the possibility of up to life imprisonment, as well as fines up to $43 million and lifetime supervised release.
The prosecution was led by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael Hudson and Assistant United States Attorney Dillan Edwards. The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Postal Inspection Services, United States Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Mount Vernon-Lisbon Police Department, and Dubuque Police Department.
