A Davenport resident, David Anthony Tumea, 44, has been sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography while on federal supervised release. Tumea was living at a residential reentry center as part of his supervision following a 2014 conviction for possessing an unregistered firearm and ammunition as a felon.
Staff at the reentry center discovered four flash drives inside Tumea’s hat during his entry into the facility. This discovery prompted searches of his vehicle and room, resulting in the seizure of 27 electronic devices, including storage devices and a cell phone. Multiple devices were found to contain child sexual abuse material.
After serving his prison sentence, Tumea will be subject to ten years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $35,000 in restitution. Federal inmates are not eligible for parole.
Tumea’s supervised release from his previous conviction was revoked by the Court, which imposed an additional 18-month imprisonment term to run consecutively with the new sentence.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative started in May 2006 aimed at addressing child sexual exploitation and abuse by coordinating efforts among federal, state, and local agencies to identify offenders and rescue victims.
