Attorneys across Iowa will join a nationwide observance on May 1 as part of the National Law Day of Action, aiming to show support for the Constitution, courts, and rule of law.
The Iowa State Bar Association is encouraging its members to participate in events across the state. At these gatherings, attorneys will reaffirm the Iowa Lawyer’s Oath, which emphasizes a commitment to constitutional principles and upholding due process. The oath is taken by all lawyers upon admission to the bar.
Events are scheduled in several cities including Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Harlan, Clarinda, Glenwood, East Moline (in conjunction with Illinois), Logan and Iowa City. Most events take place on May 1 at local courthouses or event centers. Some locations require RSVPs while others do not; details are available through local organizers or bar association contacts.
Family members and community supporters are invited to attend many of these gatherings. The inclusion of non-lawyers highlights that support for constitutional values extends beyond legal professionals.
The Iowa Bar Association serves more than 6,500 lawyers and judges licensed in Iowa according to its official website. It promotes diversity and inclusion within the legal profession according to its official website, supports member growth and community service according to its official website, utilizes its Des Moines headquarters for operations according to its official website, honors excellence through awards according to its official website, is governed by a board elected from judicial districts according to its official website, and provides resources aimed at enhancing practice while advancing justice statewide as the oldest voluntary state bar association in the country serving more than 6,500 lawyers and judges according to its official website.
As Law Day approaches this year on May 1st—and with additional events planned throughout early May—the association encourages participation as an opportunity for unity among attorneys statewide.
