The Iowa State Bar Association announced on Apr. 15 that it will support and promote a National Law Day of Action on May 1, encouraging attorneys across Iowa to reaffirm the Iowa Lawyer’s Oath at local events. The initiative aims to bring together lawyers and community members to stand as visible supporters of constitutional rights, due process, and the independence of the judiciary.
Law Day is seen as an opportunity for legal professionals and the public to show their commitment to upholding the rule of law. By retaking the oath, attorneys demonstrate their shared responsibility in defending key legal principles.
Three main events are scheduled in Iowa: Des Moines at the Iowa Judicial Branch Building at 9 a.m., Cedar Rapids at Linn County Courthouse also at 9 a.m., and East Moline’s Bend Event Center at 11:30 a.m., held with neighboring bar associations from Illinois and Iowa. Additional gatherings are being organized by ISBA Board of Governors members throughout other communities in Iowa. Family members, friends, and community supporters are encouraged to attend these events alongside attorneys.
The association promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion within the legal profession according to its official website. Its headquarters in Des Moines serve administrative operations and host member events according to its official website. The organization honors excellence through awards for contributions both within the profession and public service according to its official website.
Serving over 6,500 lawyers and judges licensed in Iowa according to its official website, ISBA supports its members’ professional growth while helping them serve clients, communities, and the judicial system according to its official website. The association is governed by a board of 47 elected members representing judicial districts across Iowa according to its official website. As one of the oldest voluntary state bar associations in America serving more than 6,500 legal professionals statewide—and supporting justice through legislative efforts—it provides resources aimed at enhancing practice standards as well as community service according to its official website.
The ISBA encourages those interested in organizing or attending additional Law Day gatherings locally to contact their Board of Governors representative or coordinate with colleagues. Organizers invite everyone—lawyers or not—to join these celebrations dedicated “to support the Constitution and the rule of law.”
