An Iowa City resident, Alfred Washington, Jr., 46, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for possessing ammunition as a felon. The sentencing follows evidence gathered in May 2024, when authorities found a receipt for shooting accessories during a search of Washington’s home and videos on his phone showing him at a gun range.

Washington is barred from having firearms or ammunition due to prior felony convictions, including a 2018 conviction for being a felon and domestic abuser in possession of a firearm in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa.

After serving his prison sentence, Washington will be subject to three years of supervised release. Federal law does not allow parole.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The Iowa City Police Department conducted the investigation.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that brings together law enforcement agencies and communities to address violent crime and gun violence. The program emphasizes building trust within communities, supporting local organizations aimed at preventing violence, focusing enforcement efforts strategically, and tracking results.
