An Iowa City resident, Heath Ashley Harmon, has been sentenced to 132 months in federal prison after being convicted of receipt of child pornography. The sentencing follows evidence presented in court showing that Harmon, age 49, received, uploaded, and distributed files containing child sexual abuse material.
Authorities began investigating Harmon as part of an online probe into the BitTorrent network. Law enforcement determined that between August 2023 and January 2024, Harmon was distributing child pornography over the internet. A search warrant executed at his residence resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices. Forensic analysis revealed that seven devices—including a laptop computer, two phones, SD cards, and other storage media—contained child pornography.
Following his imprisonment, Harmon will be subject to eight years of supervised release. Federal sentences do not allow for parole. In addition to prison time and supervised release, Harmon has been ordered to pay $35,000 in restitution.
“This case was investigated by Johnson County Joint Forensic Analysis Cyber Team,” said United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa.
The prosecution falls under Project Safe Childhood—a Department of Justice initiative launched in May 2006—to address the issue of child sexual exploitation and abuse on a national scale. The program brings together federal, state, and local resources with the goal to locate and prosecute individuals who exploit children online while also working to identify and rescue victims.
