Joseph Lee Rhodes, Jr., a 41-year-old resident of Muscatine County, Iowa, will remain in custody as he awaits trial on federal charges related to child pornography. Rhodes faces five counts of transporting child pornography according to an indictment.

Rhodes first appeared in court on January 14, 2026. After a detention hearing held on March 2, 2026, a United States Magistrate Judge ordered that he continue to be detained until his trial.

If found guilty, Rhodes could receive a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 20 years in prison for each count.

United States Attorney David C. Waterman for the Southern District of Iowa announced the development. The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in February 2006 aimed at protecting children from online exploitation and abuse. The program brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify and prosecute individuals who exploit children online and to rescue victims. More information about Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.projectsafechildhood.gov.

“An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
