A man from Asbury, Iowa, has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for distributing child pornography. Christopher Charles Smith, 34, received his sentence on June 30, 2025, following a guilty plea earlier this year.

Smith admitted during his plea that he used a messaging service to trade child pornography with others. In October 2022, he distributed three videos of child pornography to an undercover law enforcement officer.

United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams handed down the sentence in Cedar Rapids. Smith will serve 108 months in prison followed by an eight-year term of supervised release. The federal system does not allow for parole.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project coordinates efforts among federal, state, and local resources to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.

Smith remains in the custody of the United States Marshal until his transfer to a federal prison is arranged. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert prosecuted the case with investigative support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
