A Mason City man was sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Todd Aaron Howard Hamilton Sutton, Jr., aged 34, received his sentence on June 18, 2025, following a guilty plea made on February 12, 2025.

According to a plea agreement, Sutton admitted to being the driver of a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation in Cerro Gordo County on July 27, 2024. He was arrested for driving while barred and taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail. During booking, law enforcement discovered approximately 45 grams of methamphetamine hidden on him. Sutton had previously attempted to conceal drugs during two prior bookings at the same jail for other offenses. His criminal history includes violence and drug convictions.

United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Sutton in Sioux City to 90 months’ imprisonment and a four-year term of supervised release following his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. Sutton remains in United States Marshal’s custody until his transfer to a federal prison.

Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Greenwood prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department.
