Christian Vega-Camacho, a 29-year-old Mexican citizen, was sentenced on April 6 to six months in federal prison for unlawfully reentering the United States after being previously removed. Vega-Camacho pleaded guilty on January 16 to one count of illegal reentry.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal authorities to address unlawful immigration and related offenses. According to court records, Vega-Camacho had been removed from the country in 2018 but later returned without permission. In April 2021, he was arrested in Decorah, Iowa, where he was found using fraudulent documents for employment.
After his initial arrest, Vega-Camacho was released pending trial but fled custody in June 2021. Authorities were unable to locate him until November 2025 when he was apprehended in Postville, Iowa.
United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams handed down the sentence in Cedar Rapids. In addition to his prison term, Vega-Camacho will serve a one-year period of supervised release following his incarceration. There is no parole available under the federal system.
This prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, described as “a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.” Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt prosecuted the case with investigation conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations.
Vega-Camacho remains in U.S. Marshal’s custody awaiting transfer to a federal prison.
