A Polk County resident, Andrew Charles Nygaard, has been sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography. The sentencing took place on June 11, 2025.

Public court documents reveal that law enforcement seized electronic devices from Nygaard’s residence in Granger during a search conducted in September 2022. A forensic examination of these devices showed that Nygaard had knowingly downloaded files containing child sexual abuse material from the internet between September 2018 and June 2022.

Following his imprisonment, Nygaard will undergo a five-year term of supervised release. It is important to note that there is no parole available in the federal system. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced this outcome. The investigation was carried out by the Iowa Department of Public Safety-Division of Criminal Investigation-Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation-Child Exploitation Task Force and Granger Police Department.

This case forms part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to address child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project involves collaboration among federal, state, and local resources to locate and prosecute individuals who exploit children online and rescue victims.
