A man from Sioux City, Iowa, Curtis Koesters, 45, has pled guilty to escaping from custody. The plea was entered on June 30, 2025, in federal court in Sioux City.

During the hearing, Koesters admitted that he began pre-release confinement at the Dismas Charities Residential Reentry Center in Sioux City in October 2024. This followed a previous federal conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. On November 4, 2024, Koesters failed to return to the center after leaving to seek employment. He was subsequently arrested in December 2024 in Woodbury County, Iowa, after several weeks on the run and charged with multiple traffic violations.

Sentencing will be determined by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand once a presentence report is completed. Until then, Koesters remains in the custody of the United States Marshal. He could face up to five years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release post-imprisonment. It is noted that there is no parole available within the federal system.
