Daniel Kaler, a 38-year-old resident of Sioux City, Iowa, was sentenced to 64 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography. The sentencing took place before United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.

According to evidence presented during the plea and sentencing hearings, Kaler received and possessed more than 7,000 images and videos depicting child pornography between November 2023 and October 2024. The material included content involving sadistic or masochistic conduct as well as images of prepubescent children, infants, and toddlers.

A CyberTip from Verizon’s cloud storage company alerted the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about downloads of child pornography linked to Kaler’s account. Law enforcement officers executed a search warrant on Kaler’s electronic devices. Analysis revealed that he used third-party web browsers “Brave” and “Yandex” to search for and download illegal material.

Kaler was ordered to serve five years of supervised release following his imprisonment and must pay $6,600 in fines and restitution. He remains in custody of the United States Marshal until transfer to a federal prison. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify offenders and rescue victims.
