United States Attorney David C. Waterman addressed the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers at its 63rd Annual Seminar on February 27, 2026, in Des Moines. Waterman used the occasion to share updates on the mission and priorities of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

In his remarks, Waterman pointed to the office’s strong performance in national enforcement efforts. The Southern District of Iowa is currently ranked second nationwide for overdose-related drug-trafficking prosecutions and is among the top five districts for human-trafficking enforcement. He also highlighted successful outcomes in complex cases, including RICO prosecutions against criminal organizations such as the Fifth Street and OMB gangs, as well as white-collar cases aimed at protecting vulnerable victims.

“Our office is committed to protecting the public through strong enforcement and close partnerships with federal, state, and local law enforcement,” said U.S. Attorney Waterman. “These recent results reflect the dedication, professionalism, and excellence of our federal prosecutors and law enforcement partners.”

Waterman’s presentation provided insight into ongoing efforts by his office to address major criminal issues affecting communities across southern Iowa.
