The Iowa High School Mock Trial state tournament is seeking additional attorney volunteers to serve as judges during the early rounds of competition scheduled for March 30 and March 31 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, according to a Mar. 25 announcement.
Organizers say that volunteer judges are especially needed on Monday, March 30, with the first round beginning at 4:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, March 31, when two rounds will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Each round is expected to last about three hours. Volunteers will have the opportunity to interact directly with students as they present their advocacy skills and demonstrate critical thinking in a courtroom setting.
The Mock Trial program aims to connect students with members of the legal profession through hands-on experience that supports civics education. Organizers emphasize that attorney volunteers provide essential feedback and encouragement, helping guide students who may become future legal professionals.
This year’s event also serves as preparation for the National Mock Trial Tournament, which Des Moines will host in May. Organizers note that strong local volunteer support now will help ensure Iowa is ready to welcome participants from across the country later this spring.
Attorneys interested in volunteering can sign up using a new registration system introduced this year. Step-by-step instructions are available for those unfamiliar with the process. In addition to volunteering themselves, attorneys are encouraged to share information about this opportunity with colleagues who may wish to participate.
